SEO is an attempt to trick the search engines into ranking your site first.

This was the first slide of my myths & Legends presentation, so this is also the best place to start these blog posts, with the assumption that SEO is an attempt to trick the search engines.

It is of course a stonking big myth!!! There is no tricks, no voodoo, there are no “industry secrets that Google doesn’t want you to know”, no tricks, no sacrificing of chicken (unless you count me eating KFC). Although probably most SEOs have offered up a little prayer at some point.

As you probably know, Google publishes it’s own guidelines and basically, in no uncertain terms tells you what you need to do to increase your rankings. Of course there are techniques that work that SEO’s learn as they go, but most of these have been freely published on the net.

Good white hat SEO is simply the process of presenting good quality content in a way that the search engines find easy to understand and read and then promoting it with other website owners. Make what you do extraordinary and your site will rank.

Like every other form of marketing, it’s a case of testing what works and what doesn’t and then applying those findings to your website. The great thing about SEO is it’s measurable, if that £99 piece of software that “guarantees” top 3 results isn’t giving you top 3 results, throw it in the bin (which is probably where it should have been in the first place.) Nothing can guarantee success and anyone who says they can guarantee their results is flat out lying.
