We’ve talked about meta tags, now lets talk about the title tag. Officially not a meta tag but a “page element” It appears in the head of the page along with the meta tags.
Well…..

Our first truth of the series and the first time I get to use the lovely angel picture, isn’t it sweet
. Yep, the title tag is probably the most important on page element affecting your Google rankings. Here’s the low down on the title tag
- It is often (but not always) what Google uses as the page title in the SERPs
- Google will read and index the first 164 characters of the title tag, this should contain your keywords as it is a ranking factor but remember that you can adversely affect your rankings if you stuff your keywords in to often, try to make it natural rather than forced.
- Remember, your title should also be user friendly, not just spider friendly.
- A good title tag, like a good meta description can vastly increase your click through rate giving you more visitors and more conversions.
- Be honest with your title tag, it should explain what the page is about.
